OK..... before we start this one may I point out that we can all play this one as Hitori has done us all proud yet again and posted some very handy translation guides (thank you kindly govenor ) for all of us novices to get started with....You can't say you haven't been told !!!!!

The take I had was definately " Unkai Mitsu "....but was a little unsure of the rest..

I read this as.... UNKAI ............ MITSUNAO TSUKURU.............but then I might be wrong !!!............The character after MITSU is slightly subjective.

Ron San...It is my thought that the full signature reads " MITSU NAO TSUKURU" also

Nice call from the newbie ...!!!

Hitori...Don't be shy great answer, but it looks like you are sitting on the fence somewhat.

You have translated one character as SAKU could you elaborate on this...please as can be a little confusing for people as both SAKU and TSUKURU are correct.

So then  MITSUNAO or MITSUHISA ?

Subjective only because of the old signature and the corrosion......it is sometimes difficult to see the exact chisel strokes of the signature. Every smith's signature varied, and of course throughout their life, their signature very often changed in style and confidence, not to mention name sometimes. Some of the very stylised signatures can be unreadable.

Both MITSU NAO and MITSU HISA can be read into this.You seem very firm with your asumption that it is MITSU NAO ?... I too think MITSU NAO but I am keen to know how you came across the same assumption. ..?

Please forgive the pressing questions but you have made your debut postings on possably the trickiest of subjects ...Newbie to the forum I have no doubt  but to the subject ......forgive me I think not..!!

As I mentioned before, "tsukuru" is correct, but in this case, following a smith's signature it is generally read "saku", one of the alternative readings for this character, and an reading that suggests something more noble than just "make/made". It adds and artisitc quality, that should infer "created", "fabricated", which sound a heck of a lot better. keeping wihr

He was a famous sword smith wasn't he...?? Renown for his work in plastic bottles & selotape.....Part of the Blue Peter school I believe..!!
