I think a happuri has cheek protection like this one.

I am not sure how this was worn, I do not see any holes other than the 3 showing on each side so I do not see how this would have had a cloth lining like most other forehead protectors that I have seen, but its possible it was re coated at some point and some holes are not visible.

The first piece is a rather suspect. It has no padding on the inner face and is rather crude. I would have to honestly say everything about it screams that it is a fake to me. The second peice of course is one of the mass produced modern happuri that are everywhere being sold as Muormachi period items by small dealers. The Lacquered piece is great. A very nice above average example.
I agree with Trevor. The first piece does not look like it has been lacquered with Urushi, although that could be because of the images. The interior is not flush as one would expect and there are no holes for the attachment of lining.
