I cannot think that these are the marks left by bullets, they are to "square", what i mean is that you would expect a round to hit at some sort of an angle and not leave such a perfectly round mark. In addition the velocity of the round would make it very unlikely that considerable amount of the urushi would not have been removed.

What about armor that was bullet tested before it was lacquered?
I've one too, it's very heavy. Katchu makers used em to make sales on the thinner gear I guess.
I just checked, dents on all 4 panels...I have seen a few dou with such tests but I have not seen any kabuto, like I said this one is extremely heavy. Thanks for the input! Leroy, if you look at the picture of the dou with the tests, it has around 12 or more...seems like over kill but I guess if you were trying to prove a point then that would have been the way...show that all panels were bullet proof.
I've seen bullet tests on many items but never so many! I still think that the tests may have been done with a lightened charge, although still impressive.
Honestly it's a very nice Kabuto and i've seen very few with a bullet test as opposed to more Dou's with the test so far. In my job field since i'm Army Infantry and i do shoot alot i.e. (at people or objects like cars and what not ) I'd say bullet test ! An a key to remember is that musket ball's were generally made from lead, which would or would not make a nice round impact strike since its a soft metal an would expand just a bit upon impact. Even 5.56 mm doesnt hit people or hard objects with perfect or nice neat holes other then paper targets...lol. An the sad thing is i can say that Kabuto as old as it is, is still better made for protection then my Mitch or ACH ( helmet ).
